Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings for Kids
When your child comes in for a checkup and cleaning, we’ll do everything we can to make the experience fun and educational. We want to get to know your child on a personal basis and earn their trust. Dr. Cline will also monitor your child’s oral development as they continue to grow. Then, our gentle team can clean their teeth, explain concepts in terms your little one understands, and give them tips for fighting cavities.
Did you know that cavities most commonly occur on the teeth in the back? The molars and premolars have deep grooves ideal for grinding food, but these areas are also ideal for bacteria and plaque to accumulate and cause decay. This is particularly true for children, who are still learning the proper technique for dental hygiene. To help protect these vulnerable teeth, we can place a layer of dental plastic called a dental sealant. It serves as a barrier, preventing cavities for up to 10 years!
Although fluoride benefits every patient regardless of age, it can be especially helpful for children, who can miss certain areas of the mouth in their daily hygiene. Plus, primary or baby teeth have a much thinner layer of enamel, which makes them more sensitive to decay. After we’ve gently cleaned your child’s smile, we can put a concentrated coating of fluoride onto their teeth to reinforce the enamel. As a result, they’ll be less likely to experience a cavity in between dental visits.
Don’t be surprised if your child has a cavity at some point. As your child improves in their hygiene skills, they can better avoid decay in the future. In the meantime, our team can remove the decayed tooth structure and fill it with strong composite resin. This filling material not only protects the tooth from future decay, but it looks just like natural enamel, so no one will be able to tell that there was a problem in the first place.
Is your child active in sports? Do they play a sport where an impact to the face could happen? In contact sports like football, hockey, lacrosse, and rugby, a mouthguard is an essential piece of safety equipment. Even in non-contact sports like basketball and soccer, a mouthguard can significantly reduce the likelihood of a dental injury and emergency. Although you can find mouthguards at the store, custom mouthguards with us fit more comfortably and securely.
