Why Choose Oxford Dental Care of Idaho Falls for Sedation Dentistry?

  • Multiple Sedation Options Offered
  • Emergency Patients

Oral Conscious Sedation Dentistry

Patient taking oral conscious sedation dentistry pill

With oral conscious sedation, we prescribe a pill in advance for the patient to take several hours before the appointment. By the time they arrive, they should feel completely relaxed and at ease. The patient will be awake and able to respond to our team, but they will likely not remember any details from the visit. Please keep in mind that the effects of oral conscious sedation can last for hours following the appointment, so you will need to have someone take you to and from our dental office and monitor you before you resume normal activities.

IV Dental Sedation

For more complex procedures or in cases of severe dental anxiety, we can use IV sedation to put you at ease while you’re in the dental chair. Delivered straight to the bloodstream, IV sedation kicks in quickly and has a powerful effect. Although this sedation doesn’t put you to sleep, you may feel comfortable enough to fall asleep during the procedure! Our highly trained team will monitor you throughout the entire appointment to ensure your safety.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

At Oxford Dental Care of Idaho Falls, our team goes above and beyond to create a pleasant dental experience for our patients. Even if you suffer from extreme dental anxiety or fear, your sedation dentist in Idaho Falls can help you relax enough to get the care you need to keep your smile healthy. That’s why we offer multiple sedation options to soothe your nerves. In the section below, we’ve included the answers to some frequently asked questions about sedation dentistry.

Is Sedation Dentistry Right for Me?

Most patients who experience some degree of dental anxiety make good candidates for sedation dentistry. We may also recommend sedation for patients who:

  • Are nervous or fearful around needles
  • Do not respond well to typical numbing agents
  • Cannot handle the sights, sounds, or smells of a dentist’s office
  • Have extremely sensitive teeth or a touchy gag reflex
  • Must undergo extensive treatment in one sitting
  • Have difficulty sitting still in the chair for a prolonged period of time

It should be noted that some medical conditions may not make sedation ideal. These include pregnancy, sleep apnea, and others. Before receiving any kind of sedation, Dr. Cline will review your medical history and any current medications you’re taking. From there, he can decide whether dental sedation is right for you, and if so, what type.

Will I Feel Anything with Sedation Dentistry?

In most cases, patients feel virtually nothing during their treatment. The sedatives we use reduce your brain’s ability to register pain. Additionally, we’ll often administer a local anesthetic to ensure you’re comfortable. Depending on the extent of your treatment, you may feel some degree of soreness afterward, but we’ll provide you with aftercare instructions to help you manage any discomfort.

What Can I Expect After Getting Dental Sedation?

The effects of oral conscious and IV sedation can last for several hours after your procedure has finished. You will likely feel somewhat drowsy, so you should refrain from driving or drinking alcohol for the next 24 hours or so. You should arrange for someone to transport you to and from our office, and possibly keep an eye on you for the rest of the day, if you’re receiving sedation.

You can also expect to not remember very many details from your procedure. Time might seem to move much more quickly during your procedure and even for many hours afterward.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

When administered by a trained professional like Dr. Cline, sedation dentistry is perfectly safe. With IV sedation, our team can adjust the dosage of the sedative as needed throughout your procedure. With oral conscious sedation, Dr. Cline will calculate the ideal dosage for you based on factors such as your height, weight, and gender.
